Wesleyan Men and Women Open Soccer Slates on the Road

Roanoke, Va. / Bridgewater, Va. - Both NCWC soccer teams opened their respective soccer seasons over the weekend on the road. Wesleyan's men split a pair of regional matches at the Roanoke Invitational, while the Bishop women fell at Bridgewater 2-0 on Saturday.

NCWC's men opened play on Friday night versus Lynchburg, dropping a 2-0 decision to the Hornets. The Bishops, who led nearly every statistical category, held a 13-11 edge shots but were unable to find the back of the net. LC scored early in each half, tallying scores in the 11th and 58th minutes to earn the victory.

Wesleyan bounced back on Saturday to post a 1-0 win over a talented Roanoke squad. Freshman Tyler Jones booted home his first collegiate goal in the 4th minute, collecting a deflected pass in the right side of the box for the one-timer. Junior Alex Magner did the rest in goal, making four saves on 11 shots en route to his first shutout of the season.

On the women's side, the Battling Bishops traveled to Bridgewater College for their first action of the season after having Thursday's season opener versus Guilford postponed due to weather. Wesleyan came out strong and tallied three of the match's first four shots, but the Eagles controlled tempo for much of the first half, breaking through with their first goal just before the break (43:10). BC went on to add a penalty kick in the second half for the 2-0 final.

Despite the loss, junior keeper Ashley Major was solid in goal, making a career-high 10 saves on the day.

Both teams continue play next Wednesday. Wesleyan's women kick-off a 5-match homestand at Scalf Field versus Mary Washington at 4:30pm, while the Bishop men travel to Christopher Newport for a 7:00pm tilt with the Captains.
