Women's Soccer, Volleyball Impressive in Home Openers

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The women's soccer and volleyball teams of N.C. Wesleyan opened their 2016 home slates on Wednesday afternoon, and both were impressive in their respective matches. Out at Scalf Field, Wesleyan fought Mary Washington to a 1-1 double overtime draw, while in Everett Gymnasium, the Bishops made quick work of Mid-Atlantic Christian in a 3-0 sweep.

In women's soccer action, the Eagles of UMW (1-1-1) got on the board first in the 34th minute when Marisa Madaras pocketed a one-timer off a defender deflection in the box. The Bishops (0-1-1), who narrowly missed their first goal just moments earlier on a Marissa Aguilar header off the post, capitalized late in the second half. Sophomore Jordan Forbess crossed a ball to senior Logan Bill (pictured) for a shot from 15 that found its way over the top of UMW keeper Sara Armor's hands in the 86th minute.

Scoring opportunities were limited in the two overtime periods, with the Bishops' best shot at the win coming on an Ella Burkhart corner that was inches from being headed home by junior Brittanie Hensley. Bishop keeper Ashley Major managed two of her six saves in the final OT to secure the tie.

In volleyball action, the Bishops (2-4) cruised to a 3-0 sweep (25-9, 25-13, 25-10). It was a total team effort for head coach Vicky Gentile's squad as 17 different players made their way into in the boxscore. Leading NCWC was senior Evie Hunter (pictured) with seven digs, three kills, and a pair of service aces. Tori Stewart and Samantha Morton combined for 19 kills, and sophomore Morgan Townsend chipped in seven digs. Also reaching double-figures were setters Ayla Brewer and Haileigh Reisenbeck with 19 and 10 assists, respectively.

As a team, Wesleyan racked up 41 kills to the Mustangs (0-3) 11 on the night.

Both teams return to action at home next week. Volleyball hosts Virginia Wesleyan next Tuesday night at 7:00pm, while women's soccer hosts Randolph College on Wednesday at 4:00pm. Live stats and video will be available for both matches.
