Battling Bishops Wrap Up Mid-Week Baseball and Hoops Action

Rocky Mount, N.C. / Fayetteville, N.C. - N.C. Wesleyan's baseball and men's basketball teams were in action on Tuesday and Wednesday, each dropping hard-fought decisions in their respective outings.

At Bauer Field on Tuesday, Wesleyan fell to an undefeated Barton College (10-0) squad by a 5-3 score. Bulldog hurler Troy Maslowski took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but sophomore Trey Croom broke it up with a line-drive to center. The Bishops' Brandon Wheat would deliver a two-out, two-run single just three batters later to tie the score at 2-2.

Both teams scratched a run in the eighth, with Wesleyan's coming on the first collegiate hit for freshman Alec Titmus. With the score knotted at 3-3 in the ninth, Barton used a two-out rally to plate a pair of runs on three consecutive hits to ruin NCWC's hopes for a third walk-off in as many games.

Bishop starter T.J. Wilkie performed admirably in his first outing of the season, allowing one run on six hits with six strikeouts over five complete. Senior Joseph Borgerding (0-1) suffered the loss in relief.

NCWC baseball (2-1) takes the field again on Sunday and Monday when the Bishops host Maine-Presque Isle for a three-game set at Bauer Field. Sunday's twinbill will feature a pair of 7-inning contests beginning at 11:00am. Monday's first pitch is slated for 2:00pm.

In Wednesday's hoops action, the Bishops fell at USA South rival Methodist by a 90-83 score. The Monarchs (15-10, 9-5 USA South) used a 10-0 run early in the first half to turn a 5-2 deficit into a 12-5 advantage. Although the Bishops would get as close as 38-37 just before the half, they would never lead again as the Monarchs survived every Bishop rally down the stretch.

Junior Adrian Moore finished with a game-high 25 points, 14 rebounds, and 7 assists. He was joined in double-figures by sophomore Justin Tankelewicz with 19, Robert Wilson with 14, and A.J. Frye with 13.

Men's hoops (12-11, 5-7 USA South) will wrap up their regular season at home on Saturday and Sunday versus LaGrange and Huntingdon, respectively. Saturday's tip-off is set for 2:00pm in Everett Gymnasium, while Sunday's tilt is scheduled for 1:00pm.
