NCWC Softball Opens Season, Baseball Wins on the Road

Rocky Mount, N.C. / Laurinburg, N.C. - N.C. Wesleyan wrapped up its mid-week athletics action on Wednesday with the Battling Bishop baseball team posting a 13-12 road win at St. Andrews University. Previously on Tuesday, NCWC softball opened its season versus #25 Virginia Wesleyan at Edge Field.

In softball action, the nationally-ranked Marlins (4-0) used a pair of stellar pitching performances to claim a doubleheader sweep of the Bishops by 5-0 and 10-0 scores. In game one, sophomores Hannah Ivester and Shelby Godwin registered NCWC's lone two hits as VWC's Hanna Hull struck out 18 in the complete game shutout.  Logan Lowery (0-1) took the loss for the Bishops, allowing four earned runs and striking out six over seven complete.

Game two saw junior Alicia Burns tally the Bishops' lone single, while a trio of Marlin pitchers combined for the shutout. Godwin (0-1) suffered the loss in the circle.

On Wednesday, NCWC baseball took to the road for a non-conference contest at St. Andrews. The Knights (7-8) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but Wesleyan countered with a 4-spot in their next at-bat to tie the game. Trailing 7-5 entering the fourth, the Bishops took the lead for good thanks to freshman Brad Pennington's first career homerun and a two-run double by sophomore Brandon Wheat.

Wesleyan went on to add two in both the sixth and seventh frames, then held on for the eventual 13-12 victory. Sophomore Brynner Porter (1-0) earned the win, allowing two runs on three hits over 3.2 innings. Senior Joey Borgerding tossed a perfect ninth to notch his first save of the season.

Both teams are back in action this weekend. Softball (0-2) travels to Cary, N.C. for six games in the Triangle Classic, while baseball (6-1) opens up USA South play with a 3-game set versus Averett University. First pitch is slated for 2:30pm on Friday afternoon at Bauer Field.
