WEEKEND RECAP: Bishop Teams Combine for Eight Wins

Rocky Mount, N.C. - North Carolina Wesleyan's baseball, softball, and tennis teams were all in action over the weekend. The Battling Bishops combined to go 8-5 overall, which included six victories versus USA South opponents.

BASEBALL
The Bishops dropped two of three games versus USA South foe William Peace in Holly Springs. After dropping game one of Saturday's doubleheader by a 5-0 score, NCWC bounced back for an 11-1 victory in the nightcap behind a solid outing from senior hurler Ryan Grant, who gave up just one run on six hits with seven strikeouts in 7.1 innings of work. Unfortunately, the Bishops dropped Sunday's rubber game by an 8-6 score. The Pacers plated five unearned runs in the second inning to steal the series win. Wesleyan is now 10-3 overall, 4-2 in USA South play, and will travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C. for four games during this week's Spring Break action.

SOFTBALL
Sophomore Shelby Godwin helped her Bishops open USA South play with a 3-1 mark by going 2-0 in the circle with victories over Ferrum and Averett. On Saturday, Ferrum took the opener by a 7-2 tally before NCWC salvaged the split with a 3-1 extra inning victory in game two. Godwin helped her own cause at the plate by driving in the eventual game-winning runs with a two-out, two-run single in the ninth. The Bishops, who are now 7-7 overall, went on to sweep Mary Baldwin by 10-0 and 9-2 scores on Sunday as five different NCWC players homered on the day. Wesleyan is set to host Guilford College on Wednesday at 2:00pm at Edge Field.

MEN'S TENNIS
Wesleyan went 4-0 at home over the weekend, which included a pair of USA South victories over Greensboro (9-0) and Averett (7-2). The Bishops also knocked off Division II opponent Shaw University (7-2) and regional foe Randolph-Macon College (9-0). Junior Sebastian Sikh was one of several Bishops to turn in solid performances, going 2-0 at #1 singles and 1-1 at #1 doubles. Freshman David Appelquist also performed well with a 2-0 record in singles play and 3-0 mark in doubles action. Wesleyan now travels to Hilton Head, S.C. for a series of Spring Break matches this week.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
The Bishops opened their season at home this weekend with a pair of tough losses to D-II Shaw (9-0) and a solid Randolph-Macon squad (6-3). Wesleyan played R-MC closely as junior Ana Diaz and senior Andrea Tobar each picked up singles wins, with Diaz teaming with sophomore Stephany Barbera for a doubles victory at the #2 seed. The Bishops will join our Wesleyan men in Hilton Head, S.C. for a series of Spring Break matches this week.
