Rocky Mount, N.C. - The N.C. Wesleyan Department of Athletics is continuing its celebration of Division III Week with the first of four features highlighting one aspect of its 4C Philosophy. Tuesday's focus is Character Development.
Integrity. Honesty. Loyalty. The word CHARACTER has been defined in many different ways by many different people. Perhaps one of the more popular definitions simply states that character is "what a person does when no one is looking."
At North Carolina Wesleyan, we expect our student-athletes to exhibit the highest standard of ethical conduct and sportsmanship, and our coaches are dedicated to helping develop qualities that truly define good character both on and off the court. One way the Department of Athletics provides guidance and development of these key traits is through its WAAL program.
An acronym for the Wesleyan Academy for Athletic Leadership, WAAL aims to cultivate the leadership abilities of our Battling Bishop student-athletes. Participants meet once a month throughout the academic year and undergo a series of featured speakers, team-building activities, videos, small group discussions, workshops, and presentations. Meetings are designed to develop an understanding of communication and confrontation skills, cooperative partnerships with coaches, successful team relationships, a peer network of leaders, vocal leadership, and leadership as a role model on and off the field and court. In short, true leaders possess character, and by developing the leadership skills of our student-athletes, our coaches are instilling those qualities of integrity, honesty, and loyalty, to name a few.
Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, "Intelligence plus character is the goal of true education." Let us be diligent in pursuing that goal.
Division III Week is being celebrated April 3-9 and aims to highlight the impact of Division III student-athletes on their campuses and in their surrounding communities. Below is a breakdown of Wesleyan's Division III Week schedule.

Additional Event: Pennies for a Purpose / Bone Marrow Drive (12-4pm, Southern Bank Green)
TUESDAY, APRIL 4

Additional Event: JV Baseball Wraps Up Kids Vs. Cancer Drive at Bauer Field (3pm)
