Battling Bishops Wrap Up Midweek Athletics Action on Wednesday

Rocky Mount, N.C. - N.C. Wesleyan wrapped up its midweek athletics action on Wednesday, highlighted by Wednesday's 20-8 win in baseball and the 2018 home opener for women's lacrosse at Scalf Field. Softball and golf also turned in solid outings in their respective contests this week.

GOLF
Wesleyan's golf team kicked off the week on Monday and Tuesday at the Newberry College Invitational at Kiawah Island's par-72 Ocean Course. As the lone Division III participant in the tourney, the nationally-ranked Bishops held their own against their Division II counterparts, finishing tied for 11th among 19 teams competing. NCWC freshman Juan de Giacomi led the way at 7-over par with a three-round total of 223 (74-74-75), which tied for 21st place out of 96 golfers. The solid showing was expected of the youthful Bishops, who are currently ranked 18th nationally in Golfstat.com's Division III rankings and 21st nationally in the Golfweek/Bushnell poll.

BASEBALL
The Bishop baseball team hosted St. Andrews University on Wednesday at Bauer Field, falling behind 4-0 in the first before erupting for seven runs in the second to set the stage for an eventual 20-8 victory. Wesleyan ripped 23 hits on the day, led by senior Caleb Narron's 4-for-4 showing and four RBIs at the plate. Trey Croom, Logan Andrews, and Max Johnson ripped three apiece, with Andrews and Johnson adding homeruns in the second and fourth innings, respectively. Chris Sullivan picked up his first win on the mound, coming on in relief to toss a pair of scoreless innings. The sophomore righty gave up just one hit and struck out three to help NCWC move to 4-3 on the season.

LACROSSE
Women's lacrosse (0-3) made its return to Scalf Field on Wednesday as the Bishops hosted USA South defending champion Meredith College. The undefeated Angels (3-0) raced out to a quick 4-0 lead in the opening two minutes and did not look back en route to the 19-0 shutout. Bishop freshman Alexandra Cucinotta got off NCWC's two shots-on-goal and recorded a trio of draw controls in the match, while Wesleyan goalie Sydney Smith made 12 saves in net. Meredith's Carlee Joseph led all players with four goals and three assists on the day.

SOFTBALL
NCWC's softball team wrapped up play on the road at defending Division III National Champion Virginia Wesleyan. The top-ranked Marlins were tested by the Bishops but escaped with the sweep by 5-0 and 4-2 scores. The opener saw Wesleyan's Hannah Ivester and Sarah Bowyer each go 2-for-3 versus VWC's Hannah Hul, who stayed perfect on the season with the shutout. Bishop hurler Logan Lowery took the loss after allowing two earned runs with five strikeouts over five complete. Game two saw Wesleyan freshman Meredith Mize knot the score at 2-2 with a homer in the third, but the Marlins answered with a pair in runs in their half of the frame to steal the 4-2 win after the game was called in the sixth due to darkness. Bishop freshman Beth Braswell took the loss in the circle, despite holding VWC to just five hits in the game. Wesleyan managed six hits, led by Mize's 2-for-3 performance.
