Wesleyan Men's & Women's Tennis Splits League Dual at MU

Fayetteville, N.C. - The NCWC men's and women's tennis teams traveled to Methodist University on Tuesday for a pair of key league matches. The Bishop men cruised to yet another 9-0 sweep in USA South play, but the women faltered by a 5-4 score -- the same score by which they beat the Monarchs last month in Rocky Mount.

On the men's side, Wesleyan tallied its 99th straight USA South win in dominating fashion. The duos of Ioannis Brokakis/Roberto Puig (8-5), Sebastian Sikh/David Chang (8-4), and Aditya Iyer/J.D. Telles (8-1) swept doubles play at #1 through #3, respectively. Those same six players produced six straight-set wins in singles. Sikh led the way at the top seed with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over R.J. Clement of MU (10-7, 6-3 USA South).

In women's action, the Monarchs (16-5, 7-0 USA South) took a 2-1 lead in doubles with wins at the #1 and #2 seeds by 8-4 and 8-5 scores. Wesleyan's tandem of Giulia Zanetti/Nicole Halabi got the Bishops on the board with an 8-6 victory at #3, but neither player would pick up a point at #2 or #3 singles. NCWC's trio of singles points came at the #4, #5, and #6 positions, where Talitha Rowan, Stephany Barbera, and Louis Hovhammer all won in straights. A tightly contested match, senior Florencia Sorrentino narrowly missed forcing a third set tiebreak, but eventually fell 7-6 (5) in the second to seal the match for Methodist.

Wesleyan's men travel to regional foe Johns Hopkins on Thursday, while both the Bishop men and women wrap up their home slate on Saturday versus Pfeiffer. Both matches are slated for 2:00pm at the Slick Family Foundation Tennis Center.
