Rocky Mount, N.C. - The North Carolina Wesleyan Department of Athletics hosted its 48th Annual Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, April 24th, in the Garner Lobby of the Dunn Center. Coaches, staff and student-athletes came together to celebrate the accomplishments of both individuals and teams from the 2012-2013 season. Among those athletes and teams, NCWC boasted 36 USA South All-Conference selections, four Players of the Year, three All-Americans, two USA South Championships, two Coaches of the Year and one NCAA Tournament berth. Highlighting the night’s winners were the honors given for the Male and Female Student-Athlete of the Year, along with the Male and Female Athlete of the Year.
Seniors Samantha Urquhart of women's basketball and Samia Kacher of women's tennis shared Co-Female Student-Athlete of the Year accolades, while junior Wes Thompson of football took home Male Student-Athlete of the Year honors. All three are current members of the President’s Honors List, as well as the USA South All-Academic Team. Urquhart, an Elementary Education major, and Kacher, a Business Administration major, each earned All-Conference honors in their respective sports. Thompson, who is also majoring in Business Administration, was honored as an Academic All-District selection last fall.
The final awards of the night saw volleyball senior Anna Hart named NCWC Female Athlete of the Year, while men's tennis junior Robert Kjellberg and senior Brandon Givens of men's basketball shared Co-Male Athlete of the Year accolades. Hart was a First Team All-Conference selection and the Most Valuable Player of her squad, while Kjellberg and Givens both earned All-American status this season, with Kjellberg recently being named MVP of the USA South Men’s Tennis Tournament and Givens capturing the nation’s scoring title en route to league Player of the Year honors.
The evening concluded with a viewing of the 2012-2013 Highlight Video, which featured a special gift from the athletics staff to the student-athletes that can be seen here.
