Wesleyan Suffers Doubleheader Sweep at Methodist

Fayetteville, N.C. - The North Carolina Wesleyan men's and women's basketball teams suffered a doubleheader sweep at Methodist University on Wednesday night in Fayetteville. The Bishop men opened with an 84-72 loss to the rival Monarchs, followed by the NCWC women dropping a 76-71 decision.

In the men's game, Wesleyan shot over 61 percent from the floor in the first half en route to a 40-37 halftime lead. Unfortunately, the Bishops knocked down just 29 percent of their attempts in the second half as MU out-scored NCWC 47-32 in the period to seal the 12-point win.

Brandon Brown paced Wesleyan with a season-high 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting, and he completed the double-double with 10 rebounds. Fellow juniors D.J. Weaver and Jesse Simpson joined him in double-figures with 12 and 10, respectively.

In women's action, the first half saw the Monarchs and Bishops fight to a 23-23 tie with just over five minutes left. Methodist proceeded to close out the period with a 16-5 run for a 39-28 lead at the break.

The run proved to be the difference in the game, although Wesleyan made things interesting down the stretch behind an effective press and some timely three-point shooting. A trey by sophomore Kenyata Harris got NCWC as close as 75-71 with less than ten seconds to go, but the Bishops were unable to get a steal on the in-bounds, which allowed the Monarchs to seal the win at the charity stripe.

Sophomore Alexis Fitzgerald paced Wesleyan with a team-high 22 points. Harris finished with 17 points, while Jordan Cager turned in a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Wesleyan's men (10-7, 4-2 USA South) and women (4-12, 2-9 USA South) continue conference play at home on Saturday when the Bishops host Greensboro College. The men tip off at 2:00pm, followed by the women at 4:00pm.
