Bishops Win Trio of Matches over Weekend

Rocky Mount, N.C.- NCWC soccer, volleyball and cross country were all in action this weekend, with soccer earning a sweep at Averett, volleyball downing MBC and cross country competing in Greensboro.

Friday kicked off with women's soccer picking up a 1-0 victory at Averett. Freshman Maggie Rankin scored her first collegiate goal, heading home an Ella Burkhart cornerkick with less than three minutes remaining. Senior Vanessa Batchelor secured the shutout with a trio of saves in net.

On the men's side, Wesleyan cruised to a 4-0 win over the Cougars. Junior Thorfinnur Thorfinnsson tallied a goal and an assist to help the Bishops to their third straight victory. Sheriff Secka, Daniel Kamdem and Egor Kabalin also netted scores, while keeper Jesper Olsson made three stops in goal.

Wesleyan's volleyball then hosted a USA South Play Day on Saturday. The Bishops opened with a 3-1 win over Mary Baldwin, marking their first league win of the season (26-28, 25-20, 25-16, 25-9). Juniors Tori Stewart and Evie Hunter combined for 18 kills, and sophomore Samantha Morton led the Bishop defense with ten blocks. Senior Kayla White also turned in a solid performance with 20 assists and four service aces.

The Bishops later took on Greensboro in a five-set thriller. After NCWC took a 10-7 lead in the final set, the Pride used a series of Bishop attack errors to reel off eight unanswered points to steal the victory. Stewart paced Wesleyan with 14 kills, with Hunter and freshman Taylor Smith adding 11 apiece. Hunter and libero Christina Huber also managed 30 and 26 digs, respectively.

Finally, Wesleyan's cross country team returned to action on Saturday at the Greensboro Cross Country Invitational. The 5K meet was held at Hagan Stone Park and featured 167 runners among 18 teams. The Bishops were paced by sophomore Florencia Sorrentino's season-best time of 26:16. Freshman Sarah Grossman finished just two seconds behind her, while as a team, the Bishops shaved a full two minutes off their last 5K time.

All three teams will be back in action this week at Methodist University, beginning with a cross country dual on Tuesday. Soccer and volleyball then travel to Fayetteville to take on the Monarchs the following day.
