At the time of his induction, Bill Chambers was the all-time
winningnest men’s basketball coach in N.C. Wesleyan history
with 140 victories. He led Wesleyan for nine years and was the
Dixie Conference Coach of the Year on three occasions.
Chambers' 1986-87 team went 24-7 (11-3 in the DIAC), won
the Dixie Conference Tournament with a 74-70 win over UNC
Greensboro and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Those 24 wins, in
fact, are still a N.C. Wesleyan school record.
That same team won the South Regional with a 66-64 win
over Washington (MO), placing them in the “Elite
Eight”.
His 1988-89 team went on to win the Dixie Conference Regular
Season Championship with a 10-2 mark in the league (18-9 overall),
which earned Chambers his first Coach of the Year award. He also
earned Coach of the Year Awards in 1990 (20-6, 7-3) and 1995 (16-9,
7-5).
Chambers played collegiately for Dean Smith at the University of
North Carolina.
