Tony Ferrell coached the North Carolina Wesleyan men’s
soccer team from 1980 to 1988 and at the time of his
induction, was the school’s all-time winningest coach with a
record of 100-62-13.
During his first three years of rebuilding the team, his teams
posted a 15-37-3 record. His next six years produced 85 wins, 25
losses and 10 ties. He was named the Dixie Conference Coach of the
Year in 1984 when his team was 16-2-2, finishing second in the
Dixie and making the program's first NCAA appearance. His 1987
Bishops were Co-Champions of the Dixie with a 6-1 record, finishing
17-2-2 overall. That same season, Wesleyan made its
second NCAA Tournament appearance, losing in the first round
4-3 in two overtimes.
In 1988, Ferrell’s team won the Dixie with a 5-0-1 record
and he was once again named Dixie Coach of the Year. The Bishops
returned to the NCAA Tournament, beating Mary Washington in the
first round 1-0 before losing in the second.
