Rocky Mount, N.C. - On June 3rd, former Battling Bishop Greg Viggiani did something that most baseball players only dream to do... he played at Yankee Stadium. Viggiani did so in honorable fashion as a representative of the NYPD at the "True Blue" celebrity softball game organized by WFAN's Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton.

More than 17,000 fans showed up to Yankee Stadium to show their appreciation for the NYPD and honor fallen officers Brian Moore, Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu. Proceeds from the game totaled "hundreds of thousands of dollars" according to Carton, which will benefit the Silver Shield Foundation, the NYC PBA Widows' and Children's Fund, and the families of Moore, Ramos and Liu. Use of the Stadium came free of charge, courtesy of the Yankees, and half the concession revenue was donated toward the cause.

Celebrities in attendance included New York baseball greats Joe Torre, Bernie Williams and John Franco, as well as New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani, NFL head coaches Tom Coughlin and Rex Ryan, football analyst Bill Cowher, and New York Jets wideout Eric Decker, among others.

A 2010 Wesleyan graduate with a degree in Criminal Justice, Viggiani was honored to participate in the noteworthy event. He previously enjoyed a brief, but productive, career with NCWC after transferring to Wesleyan as a junior in 2009. A career .300 hitter who led the team in homers as a senior, Viggiani helped lead the Bishops to back-to-back USA South regular season titles in '09 and '10, as well as the '09 tournament crown and NCAA berth.

On behalf of the NCWC Department of Athletics, we thank Greg (lying front in NYPD photo) for his service and his continued support of the Battling Bishops!
