Wesleyan Baseball Wins Pair to Take Series with Monarchs

Rocky Mount, N.C. - In USA South baseball action, North Carolina Wesleyan won a pair of games at Methodist University to win its 3-game series versus the rival Monarchs.

GAME 1: BISHOPS 4, MONARCHS 2
Senior Ryan Grant moved to 5-0 on the season with yet another solid start to open the series. Grant went seven innings, giving up two runs on nine hits and striking out nine. Noah Shrock and Joseph Borgerding shut down the Monarchs in the eighth and ninth, with Borgerding picking up his second save of the season.

Offensively, four different Bishops drove in runs. Sophomore Cedrick Kornegay and freshman Alec Titmus each collected RBIs in the second inning to knot the score at 2-2, while Logan Andrews drove home the eventual game-winner with an RBI-single in the 6th. Fellow sophomore Nate Gardner provided an insurance run in the 9th when his single up the middle plated Donielle Totten and pushed NCWC ahead 4-2.

GAME 2: BISHOPS 8, MONARCHS 7 (11 INNINGS)
The Bishops seemed to be in cruise control with a 6-2 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, but a couple of costly fielding errors allowed Methodist to tie the score at 6-6 and force extras. Wesleyan scratched a run in the 10th only to see MU answer once again, but in the 11th, Kornegay came through with a 2-out infield single that plated the winning run. Kornegay, in fact, finished 4-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored on the day.

T.J. Wilkie's strong outing saw the senior righty go eight complete, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits in the no decision. Borgerding (3-3) picked up the victory in relief, with Shrock tallying his first save.

GAME 3: MONARCHS 8, BISHOPS 6
The Monarchs (14-14, 6-6 USA South) plated four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to turn a 6-4 deficit into an 8-6 win and avoid the sweep. Senior Tony Sanchez paced Wesleyan's offense with a 2-for-4 day that included a homer, double, two runs scored and two RBIs.

The Bishops (19-12, 10-5 USA South) will wrap up their 2017 home slate on Tuesday when St. Andrews University visits Rocky Mount. The afternoon twinbill is slated for a 1:00pm start and will feature a pair of 7-inning games at Bauer Field.
