#20 Monarchs Sweep Bishops in USA South Play at Bauer Field

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The 20th-ranked Monarchs of Methodist University visited Bauer Field over the weekend, sweeping the 3-game league set from the Bishops by 14-4, 6-4, and 11-6 scores.

GAME 1: METHODIST 14, NCWC 4
In Saturday's opener, the Monarchs jumped out to a 5-0 lead thanks to a 4-run third inning highlighted by a 2-run triple by Clay Richardson. Wesleyan answered with four runs in their half of the frame, with sophomore Brad Pennington blasting a 2-run homer to get the Bishops on the board. NCWC's Caleb Narron later delivered an RBI-double and Logan Andrews an RBI-single that made the score 5-4 heading to the fourth. Unfortunately, the Bishops would get no closer as the Monarchs chased starter Nate Gardner (2-1) in the sixth, then tagged the Bishop bullpen for seven runs over the final three innings. MU's Tyler Brown (4-0) gave up four runs on seven hits over six complete to earn the win. Narron and junior Trey Croom had two hits apiece for the Bishops, while Richardson paced a trio of Monarchs with three hits on the day. MU finished with 18 hits as a team.

GAME 2: METHODIST 6, NCWC 4
After both starters were chased in the second inning, NCWC's Luke Mills and MU's Logan Haines engaged in a pitcher's dual from the third through the eighth innings, keeping an early 4-4 tie intact. In the top of the ninth, MU's Will May homered to lead off the frame off of Wesleyan's Jackson Moseley (0-2), and the Monarchs would later add an insurance run on a squeeze play to provide the 6-4 final. Both Mills and Haines earned no-decisions, with the Monarchs' Will Walker (1-0) picking up the win. Mills scattered four hits and notched eight strikeouts over 6.1 innings of work. Wesleyan out-hit Methodist 11-10 in the game as Croom, Andrews, and sophomore Alec Titmus ripped two hits apiece.

GAME 3: METHODIST 11, NCWC 6
In the finale, NCWC took a 2-1 lead in the second on RBIs by Andrews and Titmus, then went up 4-3 in the fifth after Gardner blasted a 2-run homer to left center. The latter lead, however, was shortlived as the Monarchs plated seven runs on six hits and three errors in the top of the sixth. Freshman hurler Drew Tubb (2-1) took the loss, allowing nine runs (four earned) on eight hits over 5.1 innings pitched. Andrews and sophomore Kevin Berry each had a trio of hits for Wesleyan, while Alex Kachler finished 3-for-5 for the Monarchs (13-2, 6-0 USA South).

The Bishops (8-7, 2-4 USA South) continue their 6-game homestand on Monday when they kick off a 3-game set with Wittenberg University. First pitch of Monday's opener is slated for 2:30pm at Bauer Field.
