Trio of Homers Lifts NCWC Baseball to 13-8 Come-From-Behind Win

Rocky Mount, N.C. - N.C. Wesleyan's baseball team got homeruns from Max Johnson, Trey Croom and Logan Andrews to post a 13-8 come-from-behind win over St. Augustine's University on Thursday at Bauer Field. The Bishops twice trailed by four runs before erupting for an 8-run seventh that gave them the lead for good.

Johnson's solo homer led off the bottom of the first and got Wesleyan on the board, while Croom led off the fourth with a similar shot. Cedrick Kornegay and Brandon Wheat added RBI-singles with two outs to get the Bishops to within one at 5-4 heading to the fifth.

The Falcons (10-16), who had already plated five unearned runs in the game, capitalized on a trio of Bishop miscues in the seventh to plate three more unearned scores and forge an 8-4 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, however, the Bishops erupted for eight runs on eight hits, highlighted by a 3-run blast by Andrews. Caleb Narron and Alec Titmus followed suit with back-to-back singles, and Kornegay brought both around to score with a double down the left field line that put Wesleyan on top 9-8. Brad Pennington added sac-fly RBI and Nate Gardner a two-run single to give Wesleyan a 12-8 advanged when the dust settled.

NCWC added an insurance run in their final at-bat, while sophomore hurler Brad Batten shut down the Falcons over the final two innings to seal 13-8 final. Bishop starter Brynner Porter got a no-decision despite giving up zero earned runs, and Jackson Moseley (1-2) picked up the win in the relief after recording the final two outs of the seventh. Kilvio Garcia (2-1) took the loss for St. Aug's after allowing six runs out of the pen.

Pennington finished with three hits to pace Wesleyan's offense, which racked up 15 hits on the day.

The Bishops (13-14) return to USA South play on Friday when they begin a 3-game set at Averett University. Friday's doubleheader is slated for a 1:00pm start, while Saturday's finale is set for 11:00am.
