USA South Announces Football All-Conference Awards

Fayetteville, N.C. - The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its 2014 All-Conference awards for football with a total of 64 student-athletes earning postseason honors. North Carolina Wesleyan had six different players garner accolades, led by senior running back Jacques Alston as the league's Offensive Player of the Year.

Alston, a Kenly, N.C. native, recently ended his Bishop career as the program's all-time leading rusher with 3,907 yards. This season, he led the USA South in rushing with 1,460 total yards and 15 total touchdowns (ten rushing, four receiving and one from a kickoff return). For his efforts, he was named to the league's First Team at running back, making him a four-time All-Conference pick during his career. Additionally, he was a First Team selection at return specialist, joining former Bishop Dwayne Hollis as the only players in history to garner First Team honors at two different positions.

Alston was joined on the First Team by sophomore teammate Malik Adams at wide receiver. Adams racked up over 1,000 receiving yards this fall and caught a program single-season record 11 touchdowns, which led the entire USA South. Like Alston, he also earned All-Conference recognition at another position as he was named a Second Team return specialist.

Senior linebacker James Wallace joined Adams and a pair of other Bishops as Second Teamers. Wallace turned in a stellar senior season that saw him break the program's career record for tackles with 317 during his Wesleyan tenure. This season alone, the former USA South Defensive Rookie of the Year led the team in total stops with 89, which ranked fourth in the league.

Sophomore Rakeem Cooper and junior Martin Brazwell picked up the first All-Conference nods of their careers on the defensive and offensive lines, respectively. Cooper led the team and ranked fourth in the conference with six sacks this season, while Brazwell helped paved the way for a record-setting rushing season for the Bishops.

Rounding out Wesleyan's honorees was sophomore Dustin Midgett, who was named to the league's All-Sportsmanship team for a second straight season.

Elsewhere around the league, Greensboro's Gregory Clifton earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, Huntingdon's Zach Brownell collected Defensive Player of the Year accolades, and Ferrum's Montel Lee was named Defensive Rookie of the Year. Rounding out the individual awards was CNU's Matt Kelchner as Coach of the Year.
