Wesleyan Mourns the Loss of Student-Athlete Kenneth Newsome

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The North Carolina Wesleyan Department of Athletics is mourning the loss of football student-athlete Kenneth Newsome, class of 2015, who was killed in a motor vehicle accident early Thursday morning in his hometown of Fayetteville.

A graduate of Westover High School, Newsome was named NCWC's 2015 Defensive Most Valuable Player after turning in a stellar senior season that saw him lead the team in tackles. Head Coach Jeff Filkovski and Director of Athletics John Thompson will be attending to the needs of our Bishop student-athletes during this difficult time.

"With a heavy heart, I informed our players of Kenneth's passing this morning," said Filkovski. "I sat alone for some time reflecting on his time as a Bishop and was moved to tears thinking of Kenneth's many contributions to our program. He will certainly be missed, but I am comforted by my faith that Kenneth now lives on with God. We ask for continued prayers for his family and our football family."

On behalf of the North Carolina Wesleyan Department of Athletics, we offer our deepest sympathies to Kenneth's family and friends, and we ask that everyone please keep his family and our coaches and student-athletes in their thoughts and prayers.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
