Bishop Football falls on the road at Maryville

MARYVILLE, TN - The NC Wesleyan College Football team completed their conference season on Saturday falling 31-14 on the road at conference champion Maryville College. Maryville finished 7-0 in the conference and will now advance to the Div. III playoffs for the first time since 2013.

Wesleyan (5-4, 4-3 USA South) scored first on the day on a 12-play, 65-yard drive that took nearly half of the first quarter. Junior QB Donielle Totten finished the final 11 yards on the ground, as the Bishops led 7-0 midway through the first quarter. However, Maryville then struck right back with a 65-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7.

The Scots would then put up 17 unanswered points inthe second quarter to take a 24-7 lead at the break taking advantage of two Bishop interceptions and a fumble.

Wesleyan would come right back scoring the only points of the third quarter on an Adrian Minondo 6 yard rushing touchdown to trim MC's lead down to 10 at 24-14.

Maryville, however, would then put the game away with a 4th quarter score to take it 31-14.

Junior tight end Ben Dorfman led the Bishop offense with 64 yards receiving on 7 catches while Lancaster caught 6 balls for 58 yards. Totten then threw for 150 yards through the air and ran for a score while Minondo rushed for 40 yards as well.

Defensively, NCWC was led by a season-high of 17 tackles from senior linebacker JT Lichtenberger while junior safety Christian Shaw also registered 11 tackles while returning an interception for 52 yards as well. Freshman DB Zykeir Hogan also totaled 6 tackles and a sack while junior safety Marcus Leggett had the other Bishop interception along with 9 tackles. The Bishops stood tall in the second half holding the Scot offense to just 7 points.

NCWC finishes the conference season at 4-3 and in third place in the conference and will complete their season with a road game at Bridgewater College (Va.) next Saturday at 1 PM.
