Bishops Split Pair at Annual Roger Taylor Invitational

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The men's basketball team of North Carolina Wesleyan hosted its annual Roger Taylor Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, November 29th and 30th. The host Bishops went 1-1 at the two-day event, as did the Wolverines of Wesley College. Greensboro College went undefeated in the tourney by earning victories over Wesley and Maryland Bible College, respectively.

Saturday's action kicked off with Greensboro downing Wesley by a 81-76 score. Raheem Martin paced the Pride with 19 point and nine rebounds, while Simeon Howard chipped in a double-double of 16 points and 12 boards.

Wesleyan then took the court for a 75-59 victory over Maryland Bible. The Bishops shot nearly 47 percent from the floor in the game to secure their fourth victory of the season. Prior to tip-off, Wesleyan recognized the tournament's namesake and sponsor, Mr. Roger Taylor, the program's first All-American.

Sophomore Eric Dortch-Jones netted a game-high 13 points, and senior Isaac Brown added a season-high 12 points and five rebounds off the bench. Freshman Adrian Moore recorded six assists and three steals.

On Sunday, Greensboro opened play with a 85-67 win over MBC. Howard and teammate Devan Gregory led the Pride with 19 and 18 points, respectively, en route to All-Classic honors.

The Bishops and Wolverines followed up with a thriller that saw Wesley come away with a 59-57 win. The Wolverines led by as many as 11 in the first half, but a 16-5 run midway the period by NCWC would knot the score at 27-27. Wesley eventually took a slim 35-31 lead into the break.

The Wolverines' advantage hovered around four points for majority of the second half. The Bishops twice led by two around the 6-minute mark, the latter coming at 55-53 on a pair of Dortch-Jones free throws with 5:41 remaining. WC's Anthony Bowers answered seconds later with a huge trey to put his team back on top, 56-55.

After trading a trio of missed baskets, a Dortch-Jones lay-up with 2:24 to go gave the Bishops a 57-56 lead that was, unfortunately, shortlived. After missing on its next attempt, Wesley countered with a steal and lay-up to climb back on top. A 1-for-2 showing at the charity stripe with 44 seconds remaining gave WC a 59-57 edge, and the Bishops were unable to convert on three attempts in the final 10 seconds.

Dortch-Jones poured in a tourney-best 24 points, with Moore tallying 11 points and four assists. Johnson and Bowers paced WC with 16 and 13, respectively. All four joined GC's Howard and Gregory on the All-Classic Team.

The entire 2014 Roger Taylor Invitational All-Classic Team follows:

Devan Gregory, Greensboro
Simeon Howard, Greensboro
Eric Dortch-Jones, N.C. Wesleyan
Adrian Moore, N.C. Wesleyan
Anthony Bowers, Wesley
Jordan Johnson, Wesley

The Bishops (4-2) return to action on Tuesday when they host William Peace University. The game is slated for a 7:30pm tip-off in Everett Gymnasium.
