Wright Honored Prior to Wesleyan Victory over MACU

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The men's basketball team of N.C. Wesleyan returned from exam week to post a dominating 110-59 victory over Mid-Atlantic Christian University on Saturday afternoon. Prior to tip-off, Wesleyan honored former Bishop standout Terry Wright, whose retired jersey #41 was officially unveiled in Everett Gymnasium.

Wright was a talented forward for the Bishops from 1981 to 1985. A three-time First Team All-Conference selection, he led NCWC to the Dixie Conference Regular Season and Tournament Championships in 1984, which followed a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 1983. Additionally, his junior season saw him named an All-Region performer and the Bishops' Outstanding Male Athlete. A two-time MVP, Wright still ranks in the top ten in program history with 1,341 points, 697 rebounds, and 113 games played.

For obvious reasons, Wright's #41 jersey was retired at the completion of his career, but up until this season, it had not been displayed in Everett Gymnasium. Two of his former teammates, John Brackett and Paul Hess, were on hand to officially unveil Wright's #41 panel along the top of the bleachers, while his coach Hall of Fame coach, John McCarthy, was also in attendance. To commemorate the day, Wesleyan Head Coach John Thompson presented Wright with a special gift on behalf of the Department of Athletics, as did current Battling Bishops on behalf of the team.

It was then time for tip-off, and although the Mustangs jumped out to an early 8-2 lead, Wesleyan wasted little time righting the ship with a 25-3 run over the next nine minutes to pull away. The Bishops, in fact, led by as many as 53 midway through the second half.

All but one Bishop found the scoring column in the contest, led by junior D.J. Weaver's 19 points on 5-of-8 shooting from downtown. He was joined in double-figures by sophomore Eric Dortch-Jones with 15, senior Jalen Cannady with 14, and junior Brandon Brown with 10. Junior Shannon Huff controlled the glass with a game-high 10 rebounds.

Marquice Sims paced MACU with 13 points and six boards.

Now 6-2 on the season, Wesleyan travels to Guilford College on Monday for a 6:00pm match-up with the Quakers. The game is the Bishops' final contest prior to the holiday break.
