Bishops Sweep USA South Weekend Hoops Action

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The men's basketball team of N.C. Wesleyan swept a pair of USA South games over the weekend, downing Huntingdon by a 92-63 score on Saturday and knocking off LaGrange by an 83-73 tally on Sunday. Junior Shannon Huff paced the Bishops with back-to-back double-doubles, averaging over 14 points and 10 rebounds per contest.

Against Huntingdon on Saturday, Wesleyan shot a blistering 67 percent from the floor in the first half, knocking down 20-of-30 attempts en route to a 48-32 lead at the break.

The Bishops went on to lead by as a many as 29 in the second half as head coach John Thompson emptied his bench. Every player, in fact, found the scoring column, led by Huff's 16 points. Junior D.J. Weaver and senior Isaac Brown joined him in double-figures with 14 and 12, respectively.

As a team, NCWC out-rebounded HC 48-28 on the day.

Versus LaGrange on Sunday, the Bishops again never trailed. Up 25-21 with just over five minutes left in the first half, Wesleyan out-scored the Panthers 11-6 to close out the period and take a 9-point advantage into the half.

LaGrange got as close as three on two occasions in the final period and trailed just 75-71 with 54 seconds left. The Bishops proceeded to knock down 6-of-8 attempts at the charity stripe in the final minute, while a Jalen Cannady steal and dunk with four ticks left sealed NCWC's third straight victory.

Freshman Adrian Moore and junior Brandon Brown netted a team-high 14 points apiece. Huff and Cannady had 13 each, and junior Jesse Simpson chipped in 11. Huff completed the double-double with a game-high 11 boards.

The Bishops are now 10-6 overall and remain atop the USA South standings with a 4-1 league mark. Wesleyan continues conference play on Wednesday with a road trip to rival Methodist University. Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm in Fayetteville.
