Wesleyan Men Win Pair at 2016 Roger Taylor Invitational

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The Bishops hosted their annual Roger Taylor Invitational on Friday and Saturday, going 2-0 in the tourney behind the play of All-Classic selections Adrian Moore, Justin Tankelewicz, and Robert Wilson.

Friday's action kicked off with Greensboro College downing Shenandoah University by 100-74 score. Joseph Gatling paced the Pride with a game-high 26 points, knocking down a program-record eight three-pointers on the night.

Wesleyan then took the court for an 87-73 victory over Bob Jones. The Bishops connected on a tourney-record 16 treys -- eight alone by Tankelewicz, who finished with a career-high 30 points. Prior to tip-off, Wesleyan recognized the tournament's namesake and sponsor, Mr. Roger Taylor, the program's first All-American and an inaugural Hall of Fame inductee.

In addition to Tankelewicz, sophomore Chris Braswell connected on five three-pointers of his own en route to 19 points, while Moore and Wilson chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively.

On Saturday, Greensboro opened play with a 87-63 win over BJU thanks to a game-high 16 points from Donavan Griffith. Wesleyan and Shenandoah followed with the a tremendous finale that ended with the Bishops holding on for a 95-91 overtime win. 

The Bishops seemed to have the game in hand, forging and 11-point lead, 60-49, with just over eight minutes remaining. The Hornets, however, used a 19-2 run over the next six minutes to take a 6-point lead of their own, 68-62, at the 2:12 mark. Moore countered for the Bishops with three straight bombs from behind the arc to erase the deficit and give NCWC a 71-70 lead with 46 seconds remaining.

A crucial SU turnover gave the ball back to Wesleyan, and a pair of free throws by Tankelewicz put the Bishops on top 73-70. The two makes proved to be vital as the Hornets' Malcolm Clark drained a game-tying trey with five ticks left to force OT. SU then struck first in ovetime, but back-to-back treys by Moore and Tankelewicz gave NCWC a lead it would not relinquish. Tankelewicz added another trey minutes later, while as a team, the Bishops knocked down 13-of-14 attempts at the charity stripe to seal the thrilling win.

Moore and Tankelewicz each finished with 26 points, with Wilson adding 14 points and nine rebounds. Clark paced Shenandoah with 28 points in the contest.

After the final game, the 2016 Roger Taylor Invitational All-Classic Team was announced as follows:

The Bishops (5-3) return to action on Thursday when they travel to Mid-Atlantic Christian University. The game is slated for a 7:00pm tip-off.
