Team Effort Lifts NCWC to Come-from-Behind Win over Pride

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The N.C. Wesleyan men's basketball team picked up its first USA South win Wednesday night in thrilling fashion, erasing an 18-point deficit to post a 102-96 OT victory over league-leading Greensboro in Everett Gym. All five starters reached double figures for the Bishops, who are now 8-6 overall, 1-2 in league play.

Regulation was a tale of two halves. The Pride (9-6, 3-1 USA South) blistered the nets in the first 20 minutes, knocking down over 50 percent of their attempts to twice forge and 18-point advantage -- the latter coming at 51-33 with 1:26 to go. NCWC managed to tally the final five points of the period to cut the deficit to 13 at the break, 51-38.

It was then Wesleyan that lit it up in the second half, connecting on nearly 63 percent of its attempts to erase the double-digit lead. The Bishops continued to chip away behind the play of freshman A.J. Frye, whose back-to-back buckets got his team to within one, 66-65, midway the period. NCWC proceeded to take its first lead of the night behind a pair of defensive stops that resulted in buckets by junior Adrian Moore.

Down 69-66, Greensboro countered with a 22-4 run over the next six minutes to go up 15 with 4:11 remaining, and the Pride looked poised to secure the win. The Bishops, however, reeled off 15 straight unanswered points to close out the contest and force overtime, where they out-scored GC 14-8.  Moore notched eight of his team's points in the extra frame to finish with a team-high 23 points on the night. He completed the double-double with 15 rebounds while also dishing out seven assists.

Frye finished with 20 points and nine boards, while sophomore Justin Tankelewicz add 19 points thanks, in part, to his five three-pointers. Rounding out NCWC's double-figure scorers were Robert Wilson and Chris Braswell with 15 and 13, respectively.

Donavan Griffith recorded a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds for the Pride, while Joseph Gatling added 24 points.

Next up for the Bishops is Saturday's Youth Day celebration that features a 2:00pm match-up with USA South rival Ferrum College. FREE ADMISSION will be offered to all area youth, and door prizes will be available. The event, which is being sponsored by Don Bulluck Chevrolet as part of their 100-year anniversary, will also feature half-court shots for a chance at $500 at halftime of each game.
