Bishop Men Dunk their way to Day One win over SVU

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College men's basketball team dunked their way to an 88-61 game one home win over Southern Virginia University in the Roger Taylor Invitational on Friday evening.

The Bishops got out to a 40-30 halftime lead shooting 55 percent in the first half and holding the Knights to just 17 percent from behind-the-arc.  The Bishops then used four highlight-reel dunks and some big-time three-point shooting to dominate SVU in the second half en route to outscoring them 48-31 on 53 percent shooting from the floor and 60 percent from three. Wesleyan held SVU to just two three-pointers in the second half and only 13 total baskets.

Wesleyan was led by their 3 starting forwards who all finished in double-figure scoring on the night. Senior Rico Bullock led the way scoring 22 points on 6 of 8 shooting while going 4 for 4 from three while he also added 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and a block. Senior teammate A.J. Frye then posted 17 points with 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals as well with fellow senior Mitch Layton scoring a season-high of 13 points with 6 rebounds and 2 steals. 

Freshman shooting guard Garrett Phillips also added 9 points while sophomore forward Isaiah Lewis chipped in 8 points with 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals. Freshman point guard Devin Resper also added a team-best five steals with along with  4 assists with senior guard Cameron Martin also posting 7 points.

The Bishops improve to 2-4 on the season with the win dropping SVU to 1-9. Wesleyan will next take on St. Andrews University on Saturday at 3:15 PM. St. Andrews fell 85-84 to Greensboro in the first game Friday.
