Bishops Come Up Short In Battle of the Wesleyans'

Virginia Beach, Va – The North Carolina Wesleyan University Men's Basketball team traveled north to Virginia Beach on Saturday afternoon to face off against Virginia Wesleyan in the annual 'Battle of the Wesleyan's' matchup. The Battling Bishops were defeated by a score of 79-70.

The Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan got on the scoreboard first with a 7-0 run to start the game off. Kyron Kelly, the junior forward from Fayetteville, NC, scored the first points of the game for the Battling Bishops to bring the score to 7-2. The Bishops fought their way back to a 5 point deficit and a 20-15 score with seven minutes left to go in the first half but the Marlins would add another twelve points before the end of the half to take a 36-26 lead.

The second half saw the Bishops get on the scoreboard first followed by each team trading scores back and forth. The Bishops would continue to show heart and determination but fell short with the final score showing 79-70 in favor of the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan. 

The Bishops had four players see success in double digit scoring. The team leading scorer for the Bishops was Isaiah Lewis, the senior forward from Knightdale, NC, with 17 points on a 7 for 16 shooting night, while also adding 8 rebounds and 2 blocks. Behind Lewis in scoring for the Bishops were seniors, Sal Young, the forward from Raleigh, NC, and Brayden Dixon, the point guard from Charlotte, NC, each responsible for 12 points for the Battling Bishops. With 11 points for the Bishops topped off with a strong defensive game was Marquis Esquew, the junior guard from Fayetteville, NC.

This loss in Virginia Beach concluding the "Battle of the Wesleyans" brings the Battling Bishops record to 2-2 for the season, 0-0 in USA South Conference play. The Battling Bishops will face off against (6-0) Eastern College at 2:00pm this Saturday, November 26th, in Newport News, VA, at Christopher Newport University for the CNU/ Holiday Inn Invitational.
