Rocky Mount, N.C. - North Carolina Wesleyan's golf team wrapped up its 2014 slate over the weekend at the USA South Conference Championship held at Rocky Mount's Benvenue Country Club. The Battling Bishops carded a 5th-place finish as a team and were led by junior Chris Freeman's 2nd-place individual showing. An All-Tournament honoree, Freeman finished just two strokes behind medalist Cory Howard of LaGrange, who was 5-over for the tourney.

Wesleyan beat out league foes Ferrum, Averett, Maryville and Covenant in the standings thanks to a team-best round of 303 on Sunday, which was also best in the field in the final round. Freeman and senior teammate Allen-Michael Wilson posted the team's best individual scores of the round with 2-over 74's, while juniors Lucas Norman and Stephen Bardswick carded their best rounds of the tourney with a 77 and 78, respectively.

Freeman led the field after carding a 1-over 73 in Friday's opening round, and the Roanoke Rapids native was never more than three shots out of the lead over the course of the three-day event. His play and leadership helped the Bishops tally yet another win over a top-30 opponent (Averett University), hopefully pushing the squad to a top-50 ranking at season's end.

Playing in his final collegiate tournament, Wilson tied for 16th among the 45-man field with a three-day 236 (80-82-74, +20). Norman tied for 21st and Bardswick for 30th, with sophomore Tommy Nakamura rounding out Wesleyan's scorers in 35th.

For the first time in the program's short existence in the conference, LaGrange College captured the tournament title. The Panthers were the leaders heading into the final round of play and held off Methodist to win the title by four strokes.
