USAS Releases 50th Anniversary Men's Golf Team

Fayetteville, N.C. - The 2013-14 season serves as the 50th for the USA South Athletic Conference. In an effort to relive 50 Years of great student-athlete performances, each current league institution was given the opportunity to submit names of student-athletes who competed within the Conference and excelled not only on their campuses, but in the Conference as a whole. The league has continued its recognition of these teams with  the sport of men's golf, and N.C. Wesleyan is proud to have placed a pair of Battling Bishops on the squad.

The USA South began sponsoring a regular season championship in the sport of men's golf during the 1963-64 season, the same year the Conference officially formed. The Conference's golf teams have produced the most team NCAA Division III national championships for the League, with a total of 13. Methodist University leads the pack with ten titles, while Greensboro College has won two and Averett University one.

N.C. Wesleyan experienced much early success within the league. The Battling Bishops captured four consecutive regular season championships from 1970 to 1973 under the direction of NCWC and USA South icon Don Scalf, who garnered league Coach of the Year accolades in each of those seasons.

Below are the names and a brief summary of accolades for those Battling Bishops named to the 50th Anniversary Team. On behalf of the Department of Athletics, we congratulate each of these men on this noteworthy recognition.

  • Richard Shannonhouse ('71 DIAC Individual Champion, MVP of '71 DIAC Championship Team, NCWC Hall of Famer)
  • Terry Britt (2-time DIAC All-Conference, MVP of '70, '72, '73 DIAC Championship Teams, NCWC Hall of Famer)
