Rocky Mount, N.C. - Prior to last week's Don Scalf Invitational, North Carolina Wesleyan's golf team took time out to volunteer at the Carolina PGA & Area 10 Youth Golf Instructional Day hosted by Belmont Lake Golf Club.

The free event was open to all area youth ages 2 to 18 from anywhere in the northeastern and eastern parts of North Carolina. The only requirement was that participants possess the strength to swing a golf club.

Current certified PGA golf professionals, along with our Battling Bishop golfers, ran the clinic, and each participant received fundamentals of instruction in all phases of the game, beginning with etiquette and basic rules. Additionally, various stations were set up for instruction, including bunker play, the use of irons and putting.

Tim Wilke, General Manager and Head Golf Pro at Belmont Lake, joined with PGA Area 10 representative Buddy Lawrence to organize the inaugural event.

"We've recognized that there's a need to get more kids in the area involved with the game," said Wilke in an interview with the Rocky Mount Telegram. "Golf is a great game from a character standpoint... I love the youth, and it's important that we get them interested at a young age."

The event concluded with lunch, contests and goodie bags to take home.
