NCWC Golf Continues Stellar Season at Camp Lejeune Invite

Camp Lejeune, N.C. - N.C. Wesleyan's golf team continued its stellar spring season over the weekend at the highly competitive Marine FCU Invite hosted by Camp Lejeune. Sophomore Grady Anderson finished 1-under for the tourney to help NCWC tally a 4th-place finish.

The three-round tournament began with 31 teams that were split into separate fields after two rounds of play. By carding team rounds of 279 and 294, the Battling Bishops qualified for the Gold Championship on Sunday, competing with the likes of nationally-ranked Oglethorpe (#4), Methodist (#6), and Skidmore (#16). Wesleyan went on to tally a third-straight sub-300 round (298) to complete play at 15-over, easily beating out Skidmore and finishing just seven strokes off of Oglethorpe's pace. Methodist took top team honors at 6-under, with Duke University's "B" team finishing one stroke behind.

"I am tremendously pleased with our results," said head coach Gregg Ripke. "We played the best we've ever played in this tournament and recorded our highest-ever finish there despite a 10-hour day at the course on Friday that included three rain delays and strong winds."

Anderson led the Bishops wire-to-wire with rounds of 67, 72, and 74. After playing a par-70 course in the opening round, rounds two and three moved over to Paradise Point's par-72 course, leaving Anderson tied for 7th-place at 1-under par at tournament's end. Mariano Silvestri came in 11th overall with rounds of 70, 74, and 73 (+3), while fellow freshman Dustin Wood tallied a top-20 finish after carding scores of 70, 74, and 76 (+6).

Luke Thornton's round one 72, David White's round two 74, and Thornton's round three 75 completed the Bishops' top scorers. Duke's Andrew Bieber finished at 4-under to take home medalist honors.

Ripke continued, "We exceeded our goal this weekend by finishing in the top 10 percent of the entire field. We are pumped heading into the Conference Championship and are hopefully peaking at the right time."

The USA South Championship will be held at Highland Country Club in LaGrange, Ga. and kicks off next Thursday, April 13th. The three-round event concludes on Saturday, April 15th, with the winner earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAAs.
