Schmitt's 5th Place Finish Leads Golf Team

WILSON, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College men's golf team competed in their second tournament of the season so far playing in the D-2 Barton Intercollegiate in nearby Wilson, NC.

Junior captain Frankie Schmitt led the way for the Bishops as he had a stellar tournament placing 5th overall out of 75 golfers with a 1-over 205 at the par 68 course. Schmitt shot an even par 68 in the frt round Monday morning before firing a 2-under par 66 in the 2nd round Monday afternoon to sit in a tie for 2nd place.

He then finished with a 3-over 71 in the final round to finish 5th. The young Bishop team ended up placing 11th as a team with rounds of 308, 304, and 302, improving their score in each round.

Freshman Santiago Larumbe then placed next for the Bishops finishing in 42nd place overall as he shot three very consistent rounds in the mid 70s. He shot a 74 and 76 on day one and a 73 in the final round for a 19-over 223.

Fellow freshman Augustin Spangenberg then came next for Wesleyan finishing in 62nd place after rounds of 80-80-81 for a 37-over 241. Junior captain Patricio Basta then had an up-and-down tournament as he struggled to a 96 in the first round before improving by 11 shots in the second round with an 85. He then improved even more so in the third round on Tuesday with a 9-over 77 to palce 69th.

First-year golfer junior Jonathan Stallings then made his Bishop golf debut by shooting rounds of 86, 82, and 94.

Host Barton College won the tournament with an 804 overall score.

The Bishops will next take to the links from April 1-4 at the Golfweek Spring Invite in Orlando, Fla.
