NCWC Men Open USA South Play with Pair of Home Victories

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The Battling Bishop men's soccer team opened USA South play over the weekend, picking up a pair of league wins over Covenant College and Averett University at Scalf Field.

Versus Covenant on Friday, Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead into the half thanks to an A.J. Wadda goal at the 38:14 mark. Wadda took a through ball from senior Drew Wiltse and shot it left of Scot keeper Jonathan Crossman. The Bishops increased their advantage to 3-0 with scores in the 51st and 66th minutes by sophomore Olafur Einarsson and freshman Joseph Brooks, assisted by Jordan Davis and Thorfinnur Thorfinnsson, respectively.

Covenant made things interesting down the stretch, netting a pair of goals in the final five minutes. NCWC head coach Frankie Taal was quick to re-enter his starters, who closed out the 3-2 victory.

Against Averett on Saturday, Wesleyan opened up a 4-1 lead at the break. Unassisted tallies by Davis (8'), Baboucarr Njie (9' PK), Julius Oskarsson (16'), and Kobi Boompong (35') sandwiched Cougar score by David Cuperman. Njie added a second half goal to secure the 5-1 final, assisted by Sheriff Secka.

The Bishops out-shot their opponents 55-20 over the two-game span, with junior keeper Alex Magner making ten saves.

Wesleyan (5-3, 2-0 USA South) returns to action on Wednesday when the Bishops host the University of Mary Washington at 4:00pm.
