Bishop Men Claim Share of USA South Regular Season Title

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The N.C. Wesleyan men's soccer team claimed a share of the USA South Regular Season Championship this weekend, splitting their final two league matches to finish tied with Maryville at 9-1 in conference play. The Scots provided the Bishops with their only loss of the conference season by a 2-1 score on Saturday in overtime, but NCWC bounced back for a 3-1 victory over Piedmont on Sunday to secure the first-place tie.

Versus Maryville on Saturday, Wesleyan struck first with a goal by A.J. Wadda assisted by Baboucarr Njie in the 12th minute. After taking the 1-0 lead into the break, the Bishops posted a 12-2 advantage in shots in the second half, but the Scots' Andrew Sullivan made the most of his lone opportunity, booting home the equalizer less than two minutes into the period. It was Sullivan that also provided the Golden Goal in overtime, getting off a one-timer from 15 yards to ignite the MVC celebration.

Fortunately, the Bishops bounced back for a 3-1 win versus Piedmont on Sunday. Freshman Kobi Boompong's tally in the 16th minute was assisted by Olafur Einarsson and again gave NCWC a 1-0 halftime advantage. Similar to Saturday's match, Wesleyan found itself tied early in the second half, but this time goals by seniors Caetano Viegas and Julius Oskarsson sealed the win. The scores came 36 seconds apart in the 75th minute, with Oskarsson's coming on a diving header off a Benjamin Osei assist.

The regular season title is Wesleyan's seventh overall, the first since 2010, and the first-ever for head coach Frankie Taal. Prior to Sunday's match, Taal recognized the ten senior members of his squad that have been instrumental in the program's success (all pictured).

The USA South Conference Tournament will kick off next weekend, and the Bishops will be hosting a first round match. Stay tuned to www.ncwcsports.com for seeding, opponent, and ticket information.
