Bishops Down Pride, Wrap Up Midweek Action with 4-1 Win

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The Battling Bishop men's soccer team cruised to a 4-1 win over USA South foe Greensboro College on Wednesday afternoon at Scalf Field, handing the Pride their first conference loss of the season. Wesleyan has now won three straight and currently stands at 3-1 in league action.

Sophomore Kobi Boompong got Wesleyan going early with a goal off a Baboucarr Njie assist in the 8th minute. The Pride, however, answered with a penalty kick goal 20 minutes later to knot the score at 1-1. The tie proved to be shortlived as the Bishops reeled off a trio of goals in a five minute span, beginning at the 30:33 mark. It was then that freshman Ignacio Lerech headed home an Njie throw-in from the right side with the eventual gamewinner.

The Bishops added to their lead in the 35th and 36th minutes when Walid Yacoubou collected a loose ball in the box for his first score, and freshman Lucas Menzo followed suit with his first tally just over a minute later off a Jordan Davis helper. Wesleyan took its 4-1 lead into the break, and neither squad would score in the second half.

Bishop keeper Jordan Williams continued his stellar play, making six saves and allowing the lone PK. GC goalie Jaime Payamps tallied a trio of stops on 11 shots.

The win by men's soccer wraps up midweek athletics action for the Bishops. Women's soccer began the week with a 2-1 loss at Marymount on Monday, while the NCWC volleyball team fell in a 3-0 sweep to Meredith College on Tuesday night.  All three teams return to action over the weekend, with men's and women's soccer hosting USA South Homecoming match-ups at Scalf Field on Saturday at 2:00pm and 4:00pm.
