Bishop Soccer drops close Battle with UMW

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The North Carolina Wesleyan College men's soccer team dropped their season opener 2-1 to the University of Mary Washington (Va.) on Friday evening in the first game of the UMW Classic.

UMW got on the board early scoring in just the 3rd minute of action. However, the Battling Bishops would fight back grabbing a goal 10 minutes later as sophomore forward Aly Cadet put the first goal of the season in the net off an assist from freshman forward Riccardo Meyer.

Unfortunately, UMW (1-0) then re-took the lead with a goal in the 30th minute to close the scoring in the half leading 2-1. The Eagles also dominated the shot count with a 7-2 advantage.

Nevertheless, the Bishops would come back with stronger play in the second half as they went on to outshoot the Eagles 6-1 in the half, but sadly could not find that elusive tying goal.

Freshman Goalkeeper Julian Bergman ended up shutting out the Eagles in the second half and for the final 60 minutes after giving up two goals in the first 30 minutes. Bergman would go on to finish with 3 saves on 5 shots on goal.

Sophomore midfielder Lucas Menzo ended up leading the Bishops with 2 shots on goal while freshmen midfielders Tommaso Iovene and Matteo Costa also recorded shots on goal.

JOHNS HOPKINS 3, NCWC 0

In NCWC's second game of the Classic, they matched up with a tough opponent in Johns Hopkins University (Md.) and came up short falling 3-0.

JHU (2-0) got on the board early scoring less than two minutes into the game. They would then add one more goal in the first half in the 33rd minute to take a 2-0 lead into the break while outshooting the Bishops 9-4.

The Blue Jays would then add a late goal in the 86th minute to clinch the game 3-0 while the Bishops totaled 6 shots in the second half and 10 for the game led by 4 from Menzo and two from freshman forward Cadribo Godfrey.

Bergman ended up making 4 saves on 7 shots on goal and finish with 7 saves on the weekend.

NCWC (0-2) will now return home to host non-conference foe Christopher Newport University (Va.) at 2:00 PM on Wednesday.
