Montgomery, Ala. / LaGrange, Ga. - The men's tennis team of North Carolina Wesleyan, under first-year head coach Andres Amores, captured its sixth straight USA South regular season title with a pair of league sweeps on Saturday. The Battling Bishops opened with a 9-0 victory over Huntingdon, then traveled to LaGrange and posted a 6-0 win over the Panthers to wrap up their league slate with a 9-0 mark. Wesleyan has now won 52 straight matches versus USA South competition entering next weekend's conference tournament.

Versus Huntingdon on Saturday morning, the Bishops took a 3-0 lead in doubles action before tallying six straight-set wins in singles play. Mikhail Konnov, Elias Kerem, Peter Hviid, Eduardo Ugalde, Ben Tolhurst and Philipp Vylegzhanin anchored the line-up at #1 through #6, respectively.

Wesleyan then elected to play LaGrange upon arrival on Saturday evening due to the threat of inclement weather on Sunday. Playing to decision, the Bishops needed only singles play to secure the title. Konnov and Kerem were again straight-set winners at the top two seeds, as were Ugalde, Tolhurst and Vylegzhanin, who each slid up a seed. Alex Shirayev filled in at the 6th slot, recording a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

As the top seed, the Bishops (9-7) will take on 8th-seeded Averett University next Friday at 1:00pm in the first round of the conference tournament. The tourney consists of the top eight teams in the league and will continue through Sunday, April 13 at the Slick Family Foundation Tennis Center on the campus of N.C. Wesleyan.
