Wesleyan Men Post 7-2 League Win over Monarchs

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The men's tennis team of N.C. Wesleyan took a 2-1 lead in doubles play and tallied five wins in singles action to seal a 7-2 victory over USA South rival Methodist University on Wednesday afternoon at the Slick Family Foundation Tennis Center. Led by the top-seeded duo of Robert Kjellberg and Sebastian Sikh, the Battling Bishops were able to extend their winning streak versus USA South opponents to 58 matches dating back to 2008.

Kjellberg/Sikh dominated #1 doubles with an 8-0 victory over the Monarch duo of Taylor Buchholz and Dillon Sullivan. Bishop freshmen Fabio Pereira and Andres Gomez were 8-4 winners at #3, with MU securing its only point with an 8-3 win at #2.

In singles play, Kjellberg continued his dominance of league opponents with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the top seed. Sikh followed suit with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Buchholz at #2, while Pereira did not give up a single point in his 6-0, 6-0 victory at #3.

Freshman Fernando Nardelli got on the board with a 10-3 win in a third set tiebreakat #4, and Gomez rounded out Wesleyan's scoring with a 6-2, 6-4 win at the #5 seed. Methodist stole a 10-8 superset win for a point at #6.

"This was a great overall win against a solid Methodist team," said NCWC head coach Andres Amores. "We would like to thank everyone for coming out and showing support. Both the teams and coaches appreciated it, and it really gave us a boost."

Now 4-3 overall and 3-0 in league play, the Bishops travel to the University of Mary Washington to take on nationally-ranked Bates College on Thursday.
