Wesleyan Men's Tennis Competes at ITA Fall Regional

Sewanee, Tenn. - The Battling Bishop men's tennis team wrapped up its fall schedule over the weekend at the ITA Fall Regional. Sophomore Sebastian Sikh again played well, reaching the semifinal round of singles play and quarterfinal round of doubles action.

Six Bishops competed in the tournament's main singles draw, with Sikh, Ioannis Brokakis and Mark Sokolov each advancing to the second round with wins over players from Piedmont, Belhaven and Rhodes, respectively. Sikh and Brokakis proceeded to post straight-set wins in round two to advance to the Sweet 16, where each player posted a three-set victory over opponents from Emory. Sikh managed to go a step further with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Emory's Andrew Harrington, but eventually fell in the semifinals to EU's Rafe Mostick, who went on to win the tourney.

Freshman Richard Gende rebounded from an opening round loss to reach the finals of the main draw consolation bracket, knocking off players from Millsaps and Sewanee. Unfortunately, his match versus Belhaven's Omar Lopez was rained out.

In the Atlantic draw, Jaime Ortega and Lucas Andrada each picked up one victory, while in the South draw, Ben Tolhurst and Augustin Gonzalez also won their opening matches. Augustin went on to tally two more victories, downing a pair of Sewanee opponents to reach the semifinals, which were also rained out.

In doubles action, Sikh teamed with Brokakis for 8-2 and 8-3 wins over duos from Sewanee, but they could not get past Emory's Alec Josepher and Aman Manji in an 8-6 quarterfinal defeat. The teams of Gende/Ugalde, Sokolov/Andrada, Telles/Tolhurst and Ortega/Gonzalez all earned one doubles victory, with the latter two coming in the Atlantic draw.

Wesleyan will now begin preparing for dual play in the spring.
