Bishop Tennis to Face Johns Hopkins in NCAA Regional Semis; Acosta Selected for Nationals

INDIANAPOLIS - The 14th ranked NC Wesleyan College men's tennis team will open the 2022 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship with a regional semifinal round matchup on the road against host and 12th ranked Johns Hopkins University, the Centennial Conference champions. 

The match will be played at 10:00 AM on Saturday at the JHU Outdoor Courts in Baltimore, MD. The winner will advance to the regional finals to face either third-ranked Tufts University (Mass.) (17-2), or the winner of the play-in match between Lebanon Valley (Pa.) and Goucher College (MD) that will be played on Friday.

If there is rain on Saturday morning, the match will then be played indoors at 9:00 AM at the Naval Academy's indoor tennis center.

The Regional final will then be played on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM.

JHU is 19-1 on the season and ranked 12th nationally according to the ITA. They defeated Swarthmore College 5-3 in their conference final on Sunday. The Bishops fell to JHU in the regional final last season 5-3 when Wesleyan hosted the NCAA regional.

The Battling Bishops won their 13th straight USA South conference title last weekend when they defeated Averett 5-0. The Bishops are 28-4 on the season and 20-1 against Div. III competition. The Bishops feature the 3rd ranked player in the nation who is also the top ranked player in the region, All-American Jhonny Acosta as well as the 5th ranked doubles team of Acosta and Diego Segovia and the 9th ranked doubles team of Max Robinson and Roberto Puig. Wesleyan's #2 player, Sophomore John Falke is also ranked #18 in the region.

Acosta was then selected for the NCAA Individual tournament to be held in two weeks in Orlando, the NCAA announced on Wednesday. 

For the individual championships, the national committee selected a percentage of singles players and doubles teams from each of the eight regions. The individual championships consist of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. The selection of teams and individuals for the championships is based on won-lost record, strength of schedule and eligibility and availability of student-athletes.

The team championship will take place May 23-25, while the individual championships will be May 27-29, both at USTA National Campus, Orlando, FL; hosted by the United States Tennis Association, Oglethorpe University, and the Greater Orlando Sports Commission.
