Bishops Go 3-3 at Triangle Classic, Checkan Blasts 3 HRs

Cary, N.C. - Wesleyan's softball team picked up a trio of wins at this weekend's Triangle Classic in Cary, led by Kaitlyn Checkan's trio of homeruns and Logan Lowery's three pitching wins.

The Bishops got things started on Friday with a 7-4 win over USA South foe Maryville College. NCWC overcame a 4-0 deficit with five runs in the third and fourth frames. Checkan's two-run blast in the fourth tied the score at 4-4, while sophomore Shelby Godwin's second RBI-single of the game put the Bishops on top for good. Wesleyan went on to plate a pair of unearned runs in the sixth, which was more than enough for Lowery, who went the distance for her first win of the season.

After a tough 9-8 loss to Olivet on Friday evening, the Bishops suffered a pair of setbacks on Saturday by 8-1 and 4-0 scores to tough Washington College and Emory University squads, respectively. On Sunday, however, Wesleyan rebounded for a pair of victories over Wilson and Hood.

Versus Wilson, Lowery (3-2) was solid throughout and allowed just one unearned run on four hits with five strikeouts. Senior Tiffany Manning drove in a pair of runs, while sophomore Hannah Ivester went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

In their finale versus Hood, the Bishops faced an early 6-0 deficit but scored five runs in the bottom of the first to gain momentum. Checkan got things started with a solo homerun to left, while Manning delivered a 3-run double later in the inning and was promptly brought home by a Natalie Boykin single. A Lindsey Sharpe RBI-double completed the comeback in the second, while 2-run dinger from Checkan later put the Bishops on top.

On the mound, Sharpe settled in after a rocky first to give up just two runs over the next 4+ innings. Hood managed to knot the score a 8-8 in the top of the sixth, but Lowery came in to shut the door and set the stage for Sharpe's fireworks at the plate. The senior connected on her first homer of the season in the bottom of the sixth to give her squad the eventual 9-8 win.

The Bishops (3-5) host the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 2:00pm at Edge Field.
