Wesleyan Softball Completes Play at Grand Slam Triangle Classic

Cary, N.C. / Rocky Mount, N.C. - The Battling Bishop softball team competed at the Grand Slam Triangle Classic over the weekend, winning 4-of-6 contests to move to 6-4 on the season. Senior Peyton Hyler batted .450 in the tourney, racking up nine hits, four doubles, and six RBI over the six games.

On Friday, Wesleyan opened play with a 12-9 win over Mississippi University for Women and a 3-1 victory over conference foe William Peace. Versus MUW, junior Hannah Ivester went 3-for-3 with four RBI, while Hyler and freshman Beth Braswell each went 2-for-4 against WPU. Braswell also picked up the win in the circle in game one, with Shelby Godwin (1-0) going the distance versus the Pacers to claim her first win of the season.

Saturday saw the Bishops drop a tight 3-2 decision to a solid Randolph-Macon squad, but Wesleyan bounced back for a 6-5 win over Hood to close out play in Cary. NCWC out-hit RMC 8-3 in the opener, only to see a trio of fielding errors wreak havoc in the defeat. Senior Logan Lowery suffered the tough-luck loss, going the distance and allowing just a pair of earned runs on the three hits. In game two against Hood, Braswell (3-1) earned the win and Godwin the save (1), while freshman Erica Reddeck ripped two of NCWC's seven hits as a team.

Play moved to Rocky Mount on Sunday with the Bishops splitting the tourney's final two contests at Edge Field. Lowery (2-3) got things started with a one-hit shutout in NCWC's 8-0 win over Wilson, but the senior would take the loss in relief against Lynchburg to close out play. Offensively, Godwin, Braswell, and senior Kaitlyn Checkan each had two hits versus the Hornets, with Braswell blasting her first homerun -- a 3-run shot in the third that tied the game at 4-4 at the time. The score remained knotted over the next three innings, but Lynchburg would erupt for nine runs in the sixth to end the game.

Wesleyan returns to action on Wednesday with a doubleheader at the University of Mary Washington. First pitch is at 2:30pm.
