Softball Splits with Mary Baldwin

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College softball team split their conference series with Mary Baldwin University (Va.) on Saturday from Edge Field falling 6-1 in game one before romping 10-2 in game two.

GAME 1: MBU 6, NCWC 1

MBU got off to a quick start in game one scoring two runs in the first inning off freshman starter Laila Holloway. The Squirrels then stretched their lead to six through five innings kniocking Holloway out of the game after she tossed 4 plus innings. She allowed 6 runs on 7 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.

Freshman reliever Emily Osteguin then came in for her in the 5th and threw the final 3 innings allowing just two hits and walking one while keeping MBU off the board. Wesleyan grabbed a run in the bottom of the 5th on freshman LF Skyler Walker's RBI double while her and CF Logan Winstead also stole bases. 1B Abby Todd led the offense with two hits. 

GAME 2: NCWC 10, MBU 2 (5 INNINGS)

In game two, it was the Lady Bishops' turn to get off to a fast start as starting pitcher Emily Humphrey wiggled out of a first inning jam to then come up in the second and knock a two-run double to left. Todd then followed later in the inning with a two-run single to give Wesleyan a 4-0 lead. Back-to-back bases loaded walks in the third then made it 6-0.

Then, the big moment came in the 4th as freshman 2B Alexis Whitfield smacked a three-run homer over the left field wall plating the Bishops to a 9-0 lead. MBU would scratch out two runs in the 5th to conitnue the game before Wesleyan put it out of reach in the bottom of the 5th as Todd's RBI groundout brought in Winstead for the 10th run.

Humphrey finished throwing all five innings allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out four to improve to 8-5. Whitfield led the offense going 3 for 3 while all 9 starters in the lineup would reach base at least once.

Wesleyan improves to 14-14 on the year and 4-6 in the East Division while MBU goes to 7-20 and 2-8.

The Lady Bishops will next travel to Greensboro College on Tuesday to face former coach Meredith Mills in a 2 PM doubleheader.
