Rocky Mount, N.C. - The Battling Bishops hosted their annual Jean Edge Classic over the weekend in Everett Gymnasium. NCWC and Christopher Newport defeated Virginia Wesleyan and Ferrum on Saturday, respectively, with the Captains downing the Bishops on Sunday.

Play kicked off on Saturday with NCWC earning a 66-54 win over VWC behind junior Kenyata Harris' double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Bishops led from the tip, taking a 25-21 lead into half before out-scoring the Marlins 22-11 in the third quarter to pull away. VWC managed to get as close as six late in the fourth, but freshman sisters Cheria and Cherelle Turrentine combined to go 8-of-8 at the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the victory.

Cheria Turrentine finished with four points, five assists, and six rebounds to complete a solid all-around performance. KeChae Parker and Tylecia Williams chipped in nine points apiece, while Timyra Staton pulled down 10 rebounds. Jayla Harris paced VWC with 17 points on the night.

The second match-up featured Ferrum and CNU. The Captains opened up a 24-9 lead after one quarter of play and did not look back en route to a 59-37 victory. Sam Porter led CNU with 14 points and a tournament-record eight steals, while the Panthers' Zarkia Mattox netted a game-high 15 points.

On Sunday, the Marlins (2-2) rebounded for a 68-54 win over Ferrum (1-3). After trailing 31-29 at the half, VWC out-scored FC 23-10 in the third quarter to pull away. The Marlins' Harris turned in another impressive game with 23 points, while teammate Kelly Jones added 24. Mattox and teammate Kemani Crawford had 13 and 16 points, respectively, for the Panthers.

The tourney's final game pitted the Bishops against the Captains in a contest that saw NCWC open the game with an 11-3 run as Wesleyan's Harris, Shekinah Huggins, and Alexis Fitzgerald each drained treys. CNU (4-0) struggled from the floor in the opening period but stayed in the game by netting 14 points at the free throw line for a 20-19 lead heading into the second quarter.

Unfortunately, it was all CNU from there as the Captain defense allowed just 24 points over the final three quarters en route to an 80-43 win. Porter and Anitra Thomas each reached double-figures for CNU, combining for 23 points on the day. Harris paced NCWC with a team-high 11 points.

At the conclusion of the tournament, the following players were named to the All-Classic Team:

Zarkia Mattox, Ferrum
Jayla Harris, Virginia Wesleyan
Sam Porter, Christopher Newport
Anitra Thomas, Christopher Newport
Kenyata Harris, N.C. Wesleyan

Wesleyan returns to action on Tuesday at Guilford College. Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm.
