NCWC Women's Hoops Set to Host 3rd Annual Jean Edge Classic

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The N.C. Wesleyan women's basketball team is set to host its 3rd Annual Jean Edge Classic this weekend. This year's tourney features NCWC, Ferrum, Virginia Wesleyan, and Christopher Newport.

Saturday's action kicks off at 2:00pm with the Battling Bishops taking on the Marlins of VWC. The Panthers and Captains will then face off at 4:00pm. On Sunday, Ferrum moves to the 2:00pm slot against the Marlins, while NCWC will take on CNU at 4:00pm.  Live stats will be available for all four games.

The classic-style tournament began in 2013 and is named for Coach Jean Edge, who is considered to be the matriarch of NCWC women's athletics. Not only did she begin the softball program in 1974 and serve as head coach until 1977, but she also gained notoriety as the first-ever head coach for the women's basketball team during the 1976-1977 season. Additionally, Coach Edge's Bishop resume saw her serve as head volleyball coach from 1975 to 1977. Wesleyan's softball facility, Edge Field, is named in her honor, as well as Edge Auxiliary Gymnasium in the Taylor Center.

In addition to her coaching duties, Coach Edge enjoyed being a member of the NCWC faculty as a Physical Education instructor. She is a 1999 inaugural inductee into NCWC's Athletics Hall of Fame.

Wesleyan owns a 3-1 all-time record in the tournament. Last year, NCWC and Greensboro College both went 2-0, picking up wins over ODAC opponents Emory & Henry and Hollins. For tourney updates, please visit www.ncwcsports.com.
