LYNCHBURG, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team dropped their season opener on the road at the University of Lynchburg on Saturday falling 80-52.
UL got out to a great start in the first quarter leading 29-15 before adding to that in the second quarter to lead 23-7 in that frame. They held the Bishops to a low shooting percentage as the Hornets led 52-22 at the break. UL outshot the Bishops 47-25 percent in the first half.
Wesleyan then outscored Lynchburg in the third quarter 18-16 and overall in the half 30-28, but could not rally back against the hot-shooting Hornets.
Senior guard Nadiya Holley led the Lady Bishop offense with 13 points and three 3-pointers along with 6 rebounds and 2 steals while sophomore forward Kneciya Tripp led with 9 rebounds, 3 points and an assist. Sophomore guard Keorra Taylor was the other Bishop to score in double-figures with 11 points and a steal while forwards Arreon Walter and senior Weslie Young combined for 12 rebounds. Senior guard Daijah Davis also added 6 points and 2 steals on the day for Wesleyan.
NCWC shot 24 percent overall for the game and just 15 percent from three while UL shot 50 percent overall and 62 percent from three.
The Bishops (0-1) will return home next Saturday to host the Jean Edge classic when they play Hollins College (Va.) on Saturday at 7:30 PM followed by Stevenson University (Md.) on Sunday at 2 PM.
