Bishop Women Fall to Stevenson in Jean Edge Classic

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball program finished up hosting the second day of the 2018 Jean Edge Classic in Rocky Mount on Sunday. Unfortunately for the Bishops, they dropped their non-conference game to Stevenson University (MD) 83-67.

Wesleyan was led again by sophomore guard Kayla Johnson's 17 points as she was named to the Jean Edge all-tournament team along with teammate, guard Daijah Davis, who finished with 8 points in the loss. Hollins and Methodist also each sent one person to the all-tourney team as Hollins edged the Monarchs in Sunday's game two. 

"It was another great and competitive weekend hosting the Jean Edge Classic as we honor the matriarch of women's athletics here at Wesleyan," said head women's coach Artina Trader. "Thanks to the support of our sponsors Lloyd and Elliot Nelson and the entire NCWC athletic department we had another successful tournament. 

SU (2-2) led 21-18 after the first quarter shooting 44 percent while Wesleyan shot 47 percent. The Bishops then won the second quarter 22-20 shooting 52 percent to trail by just one point at the break, 41-40. The Mustangs then picked up their shooting in the 3rd quarter shooting nearly 69 percent and 50 percent from three to take the quarter 24-9 and basically put the game away. The teams tied at 18 in the fourth as Wesleyan would go on to fall by 16 in the end shooting 39 percent for the game as SU shot 47 percent overall.

Johnson would also add 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and a block in the game while sophomore guard Cydney Nichols then led the Bishops in scoring with 18 points shooting 6 of 8. Senior forward Nadiya Holley then led the Bishops in rebounds with 12 while scoring 7 points with 2 assists. Davis also led the team with 3 steals while guard Keorra Taylor led the team in assists with three while dropping 7 points.

The Battling Bishops (1-2) are right back at it on Tuesday with another non-conference game at Virginia Wesleyan at 5:30 PM.
