Bishop Women Fall to CNU

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.- The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team dropped their non-conference home game to former rival Christopher Newport University (Va.) 100-61 on Thursday night.

CNU improves to 7-1 overall with the win while the Bishops fall to 1-6.

A high-scoring first quarter saw CNU take a slim 4-point lead 28-24. CNU then held the Bishops to just 10 points in the second quarter to take a 45-34 halftime edge shooting 37 percent and attempting 18 free throws while the Bishops did not attempt any first half free throws limiting their chances. Wesleyan was also held to just 23 percent shooting in the second compared to 52 percent in the first.

CNU then came out shooting nearly 53 percent in the third to outscore NCWC 24-13 and take a 69-47 lead into the fourth period. CNU then closed out the game by continuing their hot shooting putting up 55  percent in the fourth to outscore the Bishops 31-14. CNU shot 50 percent from three-point range while Wesleyan shot 38.5 percent from three.

Sophomore guard Kayla Johnson led the Bishops with 15 points and 2 steals while senior guard Nadiya Holley recorded a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds. Senior forward Weslie Young also had 10 points and 8 rebounds with a block in the loss.

Wesleyan is next in action on Saturday when they travel to Div. 1 Coastal Carolina for an exhibition game at 2 PM while their next home game is Tuesday as they begin conference action at home with a game vs. Salem College at 6 PM.
