Women fall at St. Mary's (MD)

St. Mary's City, Md.- The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team dropped their first of two road games in Maryland this week falling 75-64 to St. Mary's College of Maryland on Monday evening.

The Seahawks of SMCM got out to 23-17 first quarter lead on the Bishops shooting 58 percent while NCWC shot 37 percent. Wesleyan then held the Seahawks to just 20 percent shooting and only 13 points in the 2nd quarter as the Bishops trimmed their deficit to 5 points trailing just 36-31.

St. Mary's then picked up their defense in the third quarter holding the Bishops to 27 percent shooting to take the quarter 22-14 before Wesleyan won the fourth 19-17. Both teams struggled from three-point range, but the Bishops out-rebounded SMCM 49-45 overall and 22-20 on the offensive end while forcing 23 turnovers.

Sophomore guard Nadiya Holley led Wesleyan with 13 points and 7 rebounds with a block, steal, and assist while senior forward Weslie Young recorded a double-double consisting of 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Kayla Johnson also scored 11 points with 4 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals while fellow guard Keorra Taylor led the team with 3 steals and had 6 points.

SMCM improves to 3-7 with the win while Wesleyan falls to 2-8 overall. The Bishop women are next in action tomorrow when they complete their road trip with a game at Goucher College (Md.) at 7:30 PM.
