Women Cruise Past Goucher

TOWSON, MD - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team picked up their 3rd win of the season on Tuesday evening as they cruised past non-conference opponent Goucher College (Md.) 78-55.

The Bishops were very strong defensively in the first quarter holding Goucher to just five points and 6 percent shooting as they got out to a 10-0 lead before leading 15-5 after the first. Wesleyan then kept the pressure on holding Goucher to just 11 points in the second quarter and just 17 percent shooting as they shot 43 percent themselves to lead 30-16 at the break.

A more high-scoring third quarter saw the teams combined for 38 points with Wesleyan then leading 49-35 heading into the fourth. The Bishops then shot 50 percent in the fourth and 57 percent from three as they scored 29 points and outscore Goucher 29-20 in the final frame.

Sophomore guard Kayla Johnson led the Bishops with 19 points and three 3-pointers along with 3 rebounds and 2 assists while fellow sophomore Javana Jones then posted a quality double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds including 7 offensive along with two blocks in her big game.

Also playing well for the Bishops and completing the quartet of double-digit scorers were senior forwards Weslie Young and Nadiya Holley. Holley posted a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds while Young scored 10 points and pulled down 8 boards with 2 blocks.

Sophomore Guard Keorra Taylor also led Wesleyan with 7 assists while senior guard Daijah Davis also led the team with 3 steals and added 5 rebounds with 2 assists.

Wesleyan went 1-1 on their Maryland road swing and improve to 3-8 on the season while Goucher falls to 4-5.

The Bishops are back in action on January 2 when they head to Mary Baldwin University (Va.) at 6 PM to resume conference play.
